about

Review from Cyclic Defrost, Chris Downton:

US-based electronic producer Kossak (real name Lucas Patzek) takes an extremely intricate approach to sound design, building virtual drum kits out of processed and manipulated sources ranging from live kits through to ice cubes crackling and construction site noises. On the heels of his recent appearance on Record Label Records’ ‘Electric Carpets’ compilation, this debut album as Kossak You Forgot To Kick It sees Patzek crafting twelve intricately detailed tracks that often defy categorisation, drawing equally from hip hop, fractured electro, dub and Middle Eastern music. Opening track ‘The Shit Today’ kicks things off on an eerie and atmospheric note as ghostly Middle Eastern instrumentation looms against a skeletal backdrop of clattering hip hop beats, only for more gentle synth tones to slowly lock into place against a wash of treated samples and buzzing electronics, the addition of forlorn strings taking things out towards Amon Tobin-esque territory.

‘Dawaj’ meanwhile sees the looser beats suddenly tightening up into more rigid boom-bap structures as snapping snares trace a path against burbling, vaguely g-funk electro synths and weary sounding sub-bass drops, before ‘Sparks’ sends a broken rhythmic pulse skipping against nervous-sounding synth arpeggios and icy keys in what’s easily one of the spookiest moments here, the scraping metallic tones that shuffle in the foreground heightening the tension levels. Elsewhere, ‘Mexicali’ sees the darker atmospheres peeling away in favour of a glittering electro glide that sees clicking 303 toms shuffling against bright, Jan Hammer-esque synths and the slow background trail of ambient textures. Easily one of the most impressive beats / hiphop-oriented debuts I’ve heard so far this year, You Forgot To Kick It prizes exquisite detail without ever losing sight of the bigger picture.
